When I started my journey in the UK as an international student, I never imagined the challenges and triumphs that would come my way. From my days as a student to securing a skilled worker visa sponsorship as a Communications Officer, my path has been filled with learning, perseverance, and growth.
Arriving as an International Student
My journey began when I arrived in the UK to pursue my higher education. Like many international students, I was excited yet apprehensive about the new chapter ahead. The early days were all about adjusting to a new environment, understanding the academic system, and building a network of friends and mentors.
Gaining UK Experience and Skills
While academics were a priority, I knew that gaining practical experience was crucial. I knew the sector I was passionate about and the work I wanted to do after my studies, so I took up various part-time jobs, including volunteering as a Communications Volunteer for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Edinburgh. This role taught me valuable skills such as time management, copywriting, social media management, and resilience. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to navigate the UK’s job market.
Transitioning to a Graduate Visa and Applying for Jobs
As my graduation approached, I began to explore my options for staying in the UK. The new Graduate Visa route was a source of hope. It allowed international students like me to stay in the UK for two years post-graduation to work or look for work. This visa was a perfect stepping stone towards my goal of securing a role in communications.
After my graduation, I started an internship in communications with the Edinburgh Earth Initiative while also undertaking other jobs such as cleaning, waitressing, housekeeping, and replenishment to support myself financially. While doing these jobs, I focused on finding a job that aligned with my passion for communications and PR. This phase was both exhilarating and daunting. The job market was competitive, and I knew I had to stand out. Here’s how I approached it:
- Building a Strong CV and Cover Letter: I tailored my CV and cover letters for each application, highlighting relevant skills and experiences. I made sure to showcase my enthusiasm for the communications field.
- Applying Relentlessly: Despite facing rejections, I kept applying for roles. I applied for more than 60 jobs and attended over 10 interviews. Each rejection was a learning experience that helped me refine my applications and approach.
After numerous applications and interviews, my perseverance paid off. I was offered two jobs as a communications officer at two reputable organizations. This was a dream come true. The role perfectly aligned with my passion, and the only trouble I was left with was choosing the organization that would be best for me. After several thoughts and talks with the organizations, I knew which one to go for. I took the job and was thrilled to begin this new chapter. At this time, I switched from my Student Visa to my Graduate Visa as my employer told me they would not be able to offer me sponsorship immediately.
Securing Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship
With the job offer in hand, the next step was securing a Skilled Worker Visa. I began my role and started delivering for the organization. After my 3-month probation period, I approached my employer and asked for sponsorship, which they happily accepted.
Here’s a brief overview of the process:
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): My employer provided me with a Certificate of Sponsorship, which is a key requirement for the visa application.
- Visa Application: I submitted my Skilled Worker Visa application online, including the CoS and various payments.
- Verification: Unlike the traditional biometric appointment, the Home Office now has an app that makes verification from your home easy. I was able to verify my documents, take a picture, and upload it seamlessly.
- Decision: After a few weeks of anticipation, I received the decision. I was granted the Skilled Worker Visa, allowing me to stay in the UK and work as a Communications Officer.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back, my journey from a student to a skilled worker in the UK has been transformative. It taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and following one’s passion. For other international students aspiring to secure a similar path, here are a few tips:
